Why Algae and Moss Don’t Grow on Stainless Steel
Algae and moss need two things to establish themselves on a surface: light, and a rough or porous texture to cling to. Plastic tanks, especially lighter-coloured or translucent ones, let in enough ambient light to support algae growth internally, and their surface develops micro-scratches over time that give organisms something to hold onto. Concrete is naturally porous at a microscopic level, which is an even easier surface for biofilm to colonize.
Stainless steel is different on both counts. It’s completely opaque, so no light reaches the water’s edge along the tank wall, and its surface is smooth and non-porous — there’s simply nothing for algae or moss to grab onto. That’s not a coating or a treatment; it’s a structural property of the material itself, so it doesn’t wear off over time the way an anti-algae coating on a plastic tank eventually does.
Full Drainage Makes Cleaning a Non-Issue
The second half of the maintenance story is design. A properly built stainless steel tank has a dedicated drain point at the lowest part of the tank base, so when it’s time to clean, every last bit of sediment and water can be flushed out completely — there’s no low spot where residue sits and stagnates between cleanings, which is a common issue with flat-bottomed plastic tanks.
