What Sets Them Apart
The core difference is molybdenum. SS 316L includes it, SS 304 doesn’t. Structurally and in terms of food safety, both grades are non-reactive with potable water and considered safe for storage.
When SS 304 Makes Sense

When SS 316L Is Worth Considering
If your property is near the coast, where salt-laden air speeds up corrosion, or your local water supply has a known chloride or mineral load, 316L’s added resistance can translate into a longer service life. It costs more, but in these specific conditions, that extra cost is addressing a real risk rather than just buying a “premium” label.
